Butler charged Saturday with DUI, resisting arrest

A former principal of Endeavour Elementary resigned from the school district this week following her arrest Saturday on a DUI charge.

Betsy Butler, 43, of Cape Canaveral, also faces a third-degree felony charge of resisting arrest with violence and a first-degree misdemeanor of resisting arrest without violence.

In a hand-written note dated Tuesday, Butler said she is resigning due to personal reasons, effective Dec. 13. Until then, she requested a leave of absence starting Wednesday using sick leave.

A voicemail seeking comment was not immediately returned Wednesday evening.

Butler was the principal of Endeavour Elementary until about two weeks ago, when she was reassigned to an administrative position in the area of early childhood education.

District officials said she was not the best fit for the school, which she was assigned to last school year. Endeavour is in one of Cocoa’s more impoverished neighborhoods.

“In the best interest of children, you can’t wait,” district spokeswoman Christine Davis said of the mid-year move, adding that it comes prior to state testing.

Last year, Endeavour was given a “D” school grade after receiving an “A” for the first time the previous year.

Butler’s re-assignment followed a letter of reprimand she received Oct. 25, which cited unprofessional conduct in use of profanity and intimidation with an employee in front of students and staff.

During the course of an internal investigation into the incident, questions also were raised about how Butler spent her work hours.

“It is important to note that some personnel have the perception that you are seldom on campus and/or behind closed doors when you are on campus,” the letter reads.

Previously, Butler worked as principal of MILA and Oak Park elementary schools, and as the assistant principal of Hoover Middle and Melbourne High schools.

She also taught in Broward County.

Personnel records indicate Butler’s performance as a school leader met district expectations during her 16 years with Brevard Public Schools.

For Artists and Photographers that want to follow another path

I am going to mention this tomorrow during the workshop with Scott Bourne, but I get inspiration and ideas from a great variety of sources outside of photography. Unfortunately, I find that photographers stay in the bubble too much and keep reading the same sort of thing. I put together "Trey's Book List" here on the site for you. It's filled with all types of subject matter from genetics to physics. For example, if I ever run into a fellow artist that also has a passion for Richard Feynman, we always become fast friends!

Another Nice Testimonial for HDR Spotting
I am glad some more people are getting into the private beta of www.hdrspotting.com/ - as always, the goal of the site is to showcase interesting HDRs from all over the world to drive more traffic and attention to YOUR website. It's built on top of something we call an "Attention Generation Engine". As we tweak all this out and iterate, we hope to open it up to more and more people!

There are invite codes out there - just ask around on Twitter or look in the HDR groups in Flickr or FB -- NOTE - I do not give them out - so sorry I can't help you (by design!).

Here is a nice testimonial from Gaensler (see his latest amazing shot on Flickr)

"Since uploading my images on HDR Spotting the attention I get on my work increases tremendous! This encourages me to upload one image every single day, which is a great challenge due to the matter of only sending my best images. So HDR Spotting is pushing me further in my work and the comments I get from the community refuels my creativity!"

Daily Photo - Grand Central Station
When I was in NYC a few weeks ago for the book party, I took some time one rainy evening to invade Grand Central Station without a tripod pass. I did not even know I could get such a thing easily, because the process for picking one up requires looking in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'. (tip of the hat to the great Douglas Adams).

But even with my illegal tripod in hand, and in cool and casual defiance of the three-legged police, I strode around Grand Central Station taking photos with reckless aplomb. I really wanted to get on a train and go somewhere! But, I didn't... I just walked out the exit and right into another amazing photographic situation!

Active Assignment Weekly: Jan 11 to Jan 18: 'Something with Meaning'

This weeks assignment is very simple - I just want you to photograph something, somewhere or someone, that 'means' something to you personally.

If you want to share in your description the reason why this particular subject means something to you, that's fine - if you don't want to share the reason, that's also fine. The important thing however is to take the best photograph you can of this subject in the time you have available. This subject is important to you in some way, so do it justice by creating the best image you can.

Think about all the things that make a great picture, and try to nail as many of them as you can with this submission. Create something that you're proud of!

WIT: What I am most proud of creating are the sister-friends that are my daughters. I shot this with window light and a piece of canvas for a back drop. In PSE, I desaturated a bit and adjusted the look with VirtualPhotographer.

At The Sheet Of Light

I don’t know what it is but, to me, photographing Portland on a cold crisp evening is quite therapeutic. There’s nothing like roaming the streets with my camera, especially on a Saturday night just as the city starts to come alive. The steam and smells emitting from all of the food carts blending with a freshly lit cigar while watching the various people from different walks of life going about their business is a satisfying experience. It’s something I have gotten away from considering this was a weekly ritual for me a few years ago.

On this particular evening I was looking for fresh new comps that, for whatever reason, I had never considered in the past. I decided to try an area where the Max Train curves around slowly from First Avenue onto Morrison Street with car traffic merging into the same light stream. I grabbed the Fisheye Lens out of my quiver of glass. It’s an efficient tool when conducting long exposures because of the amount of light it allows. Bottom line: it can make a light trail FAT.

This was the best image out of the several I shot. The process was time consuming because I was at the mercy of the train schedule. After shooting one long exposure I had to wait another 20 minutes for the next train to arrive so I could do it all over again. One hour to shoot just three images.

McMoon

Behind the counter of an abandoned McDonalds lie 48,000 lbs of 70mm tape… the only copy of extremely high-resolution images of the moon.

These tapes were recorded 40 years ago by Lunar Orbiter 1 to map the lunar surface to plan landing spots for Apollo 11 onward. They have never been seen by the public because at the time, they were classified as they reveal the extreme precision of our spy satellites. Instead, all we have ever seen are the grainy photo-of-a-photo images that were released to the public.

The spacecraft did not ship this film back to Earth. Instead, they developed the film on the Lunar Orbiter and then raster scanned the negatives with a 5 micron spot (200 lines/millimeter resolution) and beamed the data back to Earth using yet-to-be-patented-by-others lossless analog compression. Three ground stations on Earth (one was in Madrid) recorded the transmissions on these magnetic tapes.

Recovering the data has proven to be very difficult, requiring technological archeology. The only working version of the Ampex tape player (0K when new) was discovered in a chicken coop and restored with the help of the original designer. There is only one person on Earth who still refurbishes these tape heads, and he is retiring this year. The skills to read this data archive are on the cusp of disappearing forever.

Some of the applications of this project, beyond accessing the best images of the moon ever taken, are to look for new landing sites for the new Google Lunar X-Prize robo-landers, and to compare the new craters on the moon today to 40 years ago, a measure of micrometeorite flux and risk to future lunar operations.

MARITIME DOUGHNUTS FOR HMS EDINBURGH

HMS Edinburgh creates a perfect turning circle in the ocean as she tests the capability of her engines, going maximum speed and giving a hard left turn.

An opportunity arose where near perfect weather conditions allowed a Photex of the Ship utilising the Ship's Mk 8 Lynx helicopter. Images were captured including Aerial shots of the Ship conducting circles in her wake.

The Ship is on her final leg of the deployment and is due to return to the Uk in March.
