Active Assignment Weekly: Jan 11 to Jan 18: 'Something with Meaning'

This weeks assignment is very simple - I just want you to photograph something, somewhere or someone, that 'means' something to you personally.

If you want to share in your description the reason why this particular subject means something to you, that's fine - if you don't want to share the reason, that's also fine. The important thing however is to take the best photograph you can of this subject in the time you have available. This subject is important to you in some way, so do it justice by creating the best image you can.

Think about all the things that make a great picture, and try to nail as many of them as you can with this submission. Create something that you're proud of!

WIT: What I am most proud of creating are the sister-friends that are my daughters. I shot this with window light and a piece of canvas for a back drop. In PSE, I desaturated a bit and adjusted the look with VirtualPhotographer.

As seen from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Not the best image, but it's real dark in there and you're moving.

At The Sheet Of Light

I don’t know what it is but, to me, photographing Portland on a cold crisp evening is quite therapeutic. There’s nothing like roaming the streets with my camera, especially on a Saturday night just as the city starts to come alive. The steam and smells emitting from all of the food carts blending with a freshly lit cigar while watching the various people from different walks of life going about their business is a satisfying experience. It’s something I have gotten away from considering this was a weekly ritual for me a few years ago.

On this particular evening I was looking for fresh new comps that, for whatever reason, I had never considered in the past. I decided to try an area where the Max Train curves around slowly from First Avenue onto Morrison Street with car traffic merging into the same light stream. I grabbed the Fisheye Lens out of my quiver of glass. It’s an efficient tool when conducting long exposures because of the amount of light it allows. Bottom line: it can make a light trail FAT.

This was the best image out of the several I shot. The process was time consuming because I was at the mercy of the train schedule. After shooting one long exposure I had to wait another 20 minutes for the next train to arrive so I could do it all over again. One hour to shoot just three images.
