A former principal of Endeavour Elementary resigned from the school district this week following her arrest Saturday on a DUI charge.
Betsy Butler, 43, of Cape Canaveral, also faces a third-degree felony charge of resisting arrest with violence and a first-degree misdemeanor of resisting arrest without violence.
In a hand-written note dated Tuesday, Butler said she is resigning due to personal reasons, effective Dec. 13. Until then, she requested a leave of absence starting Wednesday using sick leave.
A voicemail seeking comment was not immediately returned Wednesday evening.
Butler was the principal of Endeavour Elementary until about two weeks ago, when she was reassigned to an administrative position in the area of early childhood education.
District officials said she was not the best fit for the school, which she was assigned to last school year. Endeavour is in one of Cocoa’s more impoverished neighborhoods.
“In the best interest of children, you can’t wait,” district spokeswoman Christine Davis said of the mid-year move, adding that it comes prior to state testing.
Last year, Endeavour was given a “D” school grade after receiving an “A” for the first time the previous year.
Butler’s re-assignment followed a letter of reprimand she received Oct. 25, which cited unprofessional conduct in use of profanity and intimidation with an employee in front of students and staff.
During the course of an internal investigation into the incident, questions also were raised about how Butler spent her work hours.
“It is important to note that some personnel have the perception that you are seldom on campus and/or behind closed doors when you are on campus,” the letter reads.
Previously, Butler worked as principal of MILA and Oak Park elementary schools, and as the assistant principal of Hoover Middle and Melbourne High schools.
She also taught in Broward County.
Personnel records indicate Butler’s performance as a school leader met district expectations during her 16 years with Brevard Public Schools.
