Interning, volunteering and being apart of a club are worthwhile to have on your resume. We only have four short years here at FSU—unless grad school is in your plans—and in those four years, it’s important to involve yourself so when you leave, you’ll have some experience that might put you ahead of someone else when applying for a job.

In college, there’s an unofficial checklist you’re inclined to fulfill before graduating and go out into the adult world. This checklist contains goals that will make finding a job easier and hopefully benefit you in your adult life. I’m not talking about a bucket list, college-type activities that include doing a keg stand or getting thrown into the Westcott Fountain on your 21st birthday.

This list includes activities that every college student should attempt to do at least once before graduation—things that will actually help you succeed in life after college and during your job search process. Though not mandatory, or even advertised much, it’s important for every college student to volunteer, join at least one club, and intern somewhere before they graduate. These are as important as attending class and getting good grades—which is always easier said than done.

A number of college students don’t end up taking part in those essential career-building activities simply because they just don’t know what’s out there or even that they’re important—and on top of that, college students are excessively lazy. Unlike the constant pressure of maintaining a solid GPA, there isn’t that same feeling for getting an internship. It’s not only a good idea, it’s a necessity when applying for jobs, and students need that hands-on experience on their resume.

Filling a resume falls solely on the shoulder of the student, you have to take the initiative and apply for internships.

At the beginning of this semester, as my roommates prepare for graduation, I realized that I would soon be a junior in college and it was time to get my act together. I applied for an internship and got it, and currently in the process of trying to join a club.

Applying for the internship was one of my smartest decisions I’ve made since starting at Florida State—aside from applying to the FSView. Although it is time-consuming and sometimes hard to balance with school, I’ve learned a lot from the internship and I think it will benefit me in my future endeavors.

There is more to college than the glamorous nightlife. There are other necessary things that students should take the initiative and do before graduating—we are in college to mold our potential future success.

Interning, volunteering and being apart of a club are worthwhile to have on your resume. We only have four short years here at FSU—unless grad school is in your plans—and in those four years, it’s important to involve yourself so when you leave, you’ll have some experience that might put you ahead of someone else when applying for a job.

Racial hoax causes PR headache for McDonald’s
By Zachary Roth

news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110613/us_yblog_thelo...

An online hoax that falsely suggests McDonald's discriminates against African-American customers is causing a PR headache for the Golden Arches.

Over the weekend, the photograph above circulated widely on the internet. The image shows what looks like an official McDonald's notice in the window of a restaurant, telling customers that blacks will be charged .50 extra "as an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies."

Many internet users retweeted the photo, using the words "Seriously McDonald's," to express their disapproval of the burger chain.

In response, McDonald's sent a tweet of its own on Saturday: "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter."

But that clearly wasn't enough to clear things up, because Twitter users continued to send out the picture, with that same message of condemnation: "Seriously McDonald's." Indeed, so many people sent "Seriously McDonald's" Tweets that the phrase became a leading entry on Twitter's trend list.
That led to a second, blunter McTweet, on Sunday: "That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax."

The latest pushback effort seems to have helped keep the photo from spreading too much further--but there's no telling how many people out there still think the photo is for real.

This is hardly the only recent barrage of negative publicity for the burger behemoth--some of it more justified. McDonalds CEO Jim Skinner recently was forced to defend the company's renewed use of the Ronald McDonald mascot to appeal to children, after critics said the restaurant's fat-laden burgers and fries endanger kids' health.

It's not clear who created the hoax image. It appears to have first showed up on the popular 4chan message board, and it was posted last year on an anti-McDonald's blog.

But there's no doubt it's fake. As some Twitter users have pointed out, the toll-free number given at the bottom of the sign is actually the number for ... Kentucky Fried Chicken.

If social networks embody the trace of the current object, is the current disenchantment the disenchantment of social networks?

An iconographic landscape as an ex-classmate meet-up in present continuous. What do I tell those I don’t know? What do I share? What for?

Does the recycling of enchantment go through the need to not leave a trace or to leave some other trace even if it’s not that of our own shoes?

Between immediacy and vertigo, weariness and redundancy, do social networks perhaps fill a crack of identities claiming to be, to be something, even if it’s just an ephemeris worryingly less empty? Is the scandalous lack of memory and past an escape towards the future? What future? That of the events some software reminds us of each time we log in, without criteria or hierarchies, in this club of friends without ID or DNA?

Our craving for the smile and despair for massage, are they a dollar-store therapy, a fellinian illusion that insists in claiming on the megaphone: yes, you can also play the leading role?
Can our demands be claimed with the “I like” policy? To what extent what’s validated is valid?
The democratizing illusion of the power of the mouse, is it a mouthwatering dish on the jaws of the ubiquitous marketing engineers?

What’s behind, on, within the narcissist exercise to publish, publish whatever? Are the means an alternative?

Take it slowly, as if it was a spirituous drink, a sedative or a Pandora’s box asking to be reenchanted to keep up with the game.

¿Y si decidimos no estarlo?

Concerned with being constantly updated, with obtaining the latest model of who knows what, with wearing the badge of the modern, informed, up-to-date consumer.

Undermined by ubiquitous messages that insist in reminding us that there’s always something better, that what we have is nor will never be enough, is bound to be old, of the last season or, which is the same but not, of centuries ago, which in consumption is equal to an era.

What if we decide not to be?

What if we decide not to run in pursuit of a future made into a gadget, a SUV or a trendy shirt?

It’s then that we realise we’re forced. That was seemed an option is nothing but a way to mask the fact that the objects themselves force us to discard them.

-They have a voice of their own and take command.

The operating system is no longer compatible with the software we need to install, the laptop does not have the required input for the new peripheral, the Ikea table didn’t resist the move, the soles of the shoes we bought last spring have come apart.

All of this thoroughly programmed to support a system that in turn supports us. To keep a job, to support the job of those who support ours, to not break a cycle of purchase-disposal-purchase beyond which we panic just to look.

And while we once again prepare to update, we fill up the trash bin with wasted resources. We dispose of the work of others: work designed to be thrown away. Objects with a programmed expiration date, which serve their only function without errors or delays: to make sure we remember to make our next purchase.

Is this the only way to keep the cycle?

How long will resources be able to support a race without (a) finishing line(s)?

Will we wait until then to imagine alternatives?

You know how sometimes you see an image online and it just says in your consciousness for ages…?

That’s the inspiration behind today’s photo. I can’t remember where I saw it, but it’s been in my head the last couple of days.

Edited in Picnik with a Cross Process effect, then in Pixlr-o-matic with a Melissa base and Smoke frame.

So, Creative Review magazine out of the UK just came up with wonderful subscription plans for US readers via twitter, like a week after i subscribed. So on twitter, Neil told me he had a treat to make up for it. Wonderful!
I can't say everyone gets a treat, because that would spoil the fun, right? But still, these guys know about pleasing customers.

(The yellow issue is one of the big reasons i subscribed.)
Thanks a ton, Neil! You rock!
