The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from the Library of Congress website, but to generate an animated gif to assist viewing. Unfortunately, animation is not automatic - to animate you must view the image at original resolution (click all sizes) or simply scroll down.

The library of congress offers a multitude of historical images online, many needing no license to redistribute. The original image of Iron Bear, Chief of Rees dates to 1866. The image, published by J. Carbutt of Chicago, is #249 in the series Crossing the Plains to Montanna with Capt. Fisk's expedition, 1866. A brief history of the Ree people (aka Sahnish, Arikaree) on wikipedia indicates their language is nearing extinction.

Views of an Arikaree village, circa 1870, are available online at Yale's Beinecke library. view 1, view 2

The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from Okinawa Soba's stream, but to generate an animated gif to assist viewing. Unfortunately, animation is not automatic - to animate you must view the image at original resolution (click all sizes) or simply scroll down.

Okinawa Soba posted several CC licensed stereoimages from the 19th and early 20th century. The original stereoview, dated to 1/11/1908, is presented for parallel viewing and shows Mark twain shooting three cushion billiards. Biographical details on this celebrated American author can be found on his Wikipedia page. This is one of many fascinating compositions to be discovered in Okinawa Soba's incomparable archive. This animated gif version exploits motion parallax to give a stereo illusion without eyestrain, to see what the photographer envisioned.
