Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This image is derived from the early 20th century American Colony stereograph titled Egypt, pyramids & Bedouins. The pyramids at Gizeh, including the only surviving wonder of the ancient world, incorporated some of the largest monoliths ever created and moved by men. An attempt to demolish Menkaure's pyramid found the effort and cost as prohibitive as for construction.

Notes on design
This photo was taken from a special perspective to the east, aligning the foreground pyramid of Henutsen with linear elements of the greater Khafre and Menkaure pyramids behind. The apex of the small one is at a point where the background pyramid edges intersect, and the edges are sufficiently parallel to continue these lines. One wonders if this cruciform element was intended by the builders. The pyramid of Meritites I also seems aligned with another edge of Menkaure's pyramid. It is interesting to note that The pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), in the rear, is contemporary with the small pyramids, predating the central pyramid of Khafre. Menkaure's pyramid is contemporaneous but its date is uncertain. There is an intriguing argument that the great pyramids were built by others then usurped, thus questioning this timeline.
