I was lucky enough to make it to a Cubs game the weekend before last. Tickets are hard to come by and, frankly, out of my price-range. But my wife and I were treated, along with some other folks, to a great game and a few hot dogs. I brought my D700 and spent most of my time wandering around taking a few pictures for the blog. You’ll see more in the future, but I thought I’d post this one right away as a few of the nice folks I was with were asking when they would see some of the photos (I realize that it’s already been two weeks, and now you have a window into just how far behind I am on all my processing!).

Wrigley is a really special place, even if you are not a Cubs fan. It is one of the last few glimpses we have to a time when baseball, and America, were a different place. Some parts of Wrigley are just as shellacked with advertising and consumerism as the rest of the world, but other places have retained something natural and authentic. In the grandstands, looking out towards the field, you can convince yourself the game and the place are timeless.

Hey all - thanks for your kind comments - here are a few details about the edit. I took three overlapping (marked as notes above), handheld 5-shot HDRs which were then processed in photomatix and CS4. Each image was then stacked with a duplicate layer that was given a 10 pixel Gaussian blur and with a -2 EV image given a +30 saturation bump in Adobe Lightroom 2.0. From there I split each image into 15-20 layers by selecting rectangles of different sizes and copy/pasting into a new layer. Each rectangle was given a slight rotation and a drop-shadow. I used the blurred image for a few frames on the edges, the -2EV saturated image for the field and the HDR for the rest.
