spreading the holiday cheer

i have several memories of second grade. one of my classmates brought a cd-player boombox for show and tell (the first cd player i had ever seen) and on the same day another classmate brought a dead squirrel in and left it on the heater over a three day weekend. i remember annoying my teacher (poor, poor mrs. dennison) about my skill with a nice pair of scissors and finding errors in word problems in the math textbooks. i remember drawing aircraft incessantly as i daydreamed about a forthcoming trip to scotland.
perhaps a more interesting story is one i don’t remember much about. of course, teachers need small projects to distract kids from obsessive concentration on the wonders of santa clause. mrs. dennison put together a craft project of sorts–she gathered all of the christmas cards she got over the years and kept a proof of the photos taken by the school photographer earlier that year. she let the children loose with scissors, and the only instruction was that we needed to end up on the christmas card somewhere.
some children became cartoonish elves, narcissists became the star at the top of the christmas trees, environmentalists became chubby polar bears, fatties become santa. their technique was terrible. they were cutting through the cards from the edges to put the pictures in the desired places, and cutting off ears and hair and generally making a mess out of their precious resources.
i kept an eye on all the other children (i’m assuming) and not only had to out do them, but i had to do something unique. i guess this is what i came up with.
